DECC Next Steps in CCS: Policy Scoping Document

7th August 2014

Developing an approach for the next phase of Carbon Capture & Storage projects in the UK.

The Government aims to deliver a secure, affordable, low carbon energy system. As part of this, the Government’s long-term vision for the electricity market, through its Electricity Market Reform programme, is to transition to a point where low carbon technologies can compete fairly on price.

Competition between technologies will allow us to meet our objectives in the most cost-effective way. Carbon Capture and Storage is a key technology which will enable this. Therefore, the Government is committed to supporting the commercialisation and cost reduction of CCS alongside the efforts of industry and governments internationally.

This document summarises the Government’s policies and actions already taken to support CCS deployment in the UK, and what we believe to be the main challenges to further commercial deployment of CCS in the UK. It invites views, inputs and evidence on addressing those challenges.
