The programme areas selected for this first call are drawn from six of eight theme areas identified in the strategy: sustainable resource consumption and management; systems for resource recovery; social dimension; environment and health; economics; and decision tools.
The programme will aim to provide a sound evidence base for policy development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation for sustainable waste management at both national and local levels, according to Defra. Moreover, it will also support the introduction of innovative waste management solutions in the UK.
A selection panel will be appointed to shortlist expressions of interest and a number of applicants will be invited to progress to full proposals. The deadline for expressions of interest is 10 January 2005.
Successful bidders will be invited to progress to full proposal by 21 March 2005, with the aim of completing contract negotiations with the successful teams in May.
