Dublin recycling centre opens
A major new materials recovery facility has been opened by the minister for the environment, heritage and local government.
Located at Ballymount in Dublin, the facility is one of the largest and most sophisticated material recovery facilities in Europe.
Minister Gormley said: “This facility will employ 85 people on site with a further 100 collecting green bins, and will have a capacity of 100,000 tonnes per annum.
“All materials collected via green bins in the Dublin region will be segregated and baled at the new facility for further processing or recovery offsite.
“Despite the current drop in market prices for recyclates, such material is still moving and consumers can have confidence in our recycling sector.”
He added that Irish consumers had an “exemplary record in recycling” which would be helped by the facility.
The facility, which opened on Monday, received Euro 26m worth of funding and sets a benchmark for the future of waste management facilities in the country.
