Data released by Dublin City Council showed that one year after the HGV management strategy was introduced in the city, the number of trucks on the conurbation’s streets has dropped by 938,000.

Introduced on February 19th, 2006, the rules prohibited vehicles with more than five axles from entering a cordoned area of the city during peak hours.

This was principally designed to reduce the use of the Dublin Port Tunnel by larger vehicles.

They also included policies allowing a limited number of larger vehicles to apply for permits if the businesses needed unloading or loading services.

Separately, a recent study by Dublin City Council showed that 60 per cent of the city’s residents were living with undesirable levels of night time traffic noise.

As a result, RTE News reported that the council was looking at ways it could further reduce noise pollution in the city.
