E.ON to cut up to 500 UK staff
Energy giant E.ON will cut up to 500 staff from its UK operations as part of a company-wide cost saving drive.
Last month the German-based energy firm announced it was considering shedding up to 11,000 jobs after a poor six months of trading, but didn’t explain geographically where the losses could be made.
But today (September 22) the company said it was looking to cut staff in support functions to ‘reflect the changed nature of the business’.
The decision was made following the sale of its distribution arm, Central Networks, in March and what E.ON called the ‘subsequent concentration’ on its customer-facing business.
E.ON said the 500 staff are based mainly at the company’s head office in Coventry with the rest at its offices north of Nottingham.
However, as the company is currently asking for voluntary redundancies, it is unable to say how many staff it will lose at the moment.
E.ON UK chief executive, Dr Paul Golby, said: “We had to undertake a deep and rigorous review of how much money we spend in order to ensure we keep costs as low as possible for our customers, become a more agile organisation and build a sustainable business in the UK.
“While I’m very aware that this will be a difficult time for our colleagues, it is our aim to keep uncertainty to a minimum and to achieve these redundancies by voluntary means.”
