Eco-heating ‘beneficial’ for mixed developments

This is according to Paraic Davis of MCO Environmental, who told the Irish Independent that switching from an oil-based heating system to wood chip and pellet-powered equipment could slash heating bills by half.

“The cost of using wood chip is 3c per kilowatt hour, oil costs 8c per kilowatt hour at the moment and is rising, so there is plenty of room for the price of bioenergy fuels to increase,” he said.

Mr Davis also said that a growing number of developments, including hospitals, schools and leisure centres, have started to use systems based on bioenergy crops instead of those fuelled with oil.

The Irish Independent noted earlier this month that those living in rural areas of Ireland can have better access to sustainable sources of fuel and heating than those in urban regions.
