The indicators aim to improve on current environmental reporting practices. They will provide a means of reporting environmental progress, and move towards comparability across companies. They will help to identify waste companies’ most significant environmental impacts.

The proposed indicators cover waste companies’ performance in a variety of sectors including: air pollution, water, waste minimisation, environmental management systems and regulatory compliance.

The indicators have been developed with initial funding from waste management company Shanks & McEwan Group, through ENTRUST, and input from NGOs, regulators and other waste management companies.

The next step will be to discuss the set of potential indicators with a range of companies in the waste management sector in order to refine them further.
