ESB announces cheaper bills

ESB Electricity Ireland has taken advantage of the new deregulated domestic electricity market by announcing reduced prices on its electricity tariffs.

Customers could see savings of up to 17% and save an estimated Euro 190 annually if they take a combined electricity and gas deal.

In March this year the Commission for Energy Regulation (CER) gave the go-ahead for deregulation, which took effect from today (April 4) and it was expected that ESB would announce new prices.

ESB’s new prices include:

·A reduction of 17% on electricity unit rates as part of a dual gas and electricity package.

·Savings of up to 14% on electricity unit rates for customers who take the electricity only product

·Savings of up to 9% on electricity unit rates with Green electricity product.

ESB says that their gas prices will undercut regulated Bord Gais Energy (BGE) unit rates by 6% and that they are responding to customer demand and feedback.

ESB Electric Ireland general manager, Liam Molloy, said: “We are very aware of the financial pressure on customers in the current environment.

“In developing our new electricity and gas price plans we are determined to provide customers with the best choice, value and products in the Irish energy market”.

The minister for Enterprise, Jobs and Innovation, Richard Bruton welcomed ESB’s price announcements saying it would benefit consumers and stimulate the economy.

He said: “Based on the figures provided, this move could see €100million or more being transferred from the ESB back into the pockets of their electricity customers alone.

“This is not including Airtricity, Bord Gais, or gas customers who are eligible for further savings. It represents a major saving for hard-pressed consumers and a small but helpful stimulus for the economy in these difficult times.”
