EU announces animal feed review following French sewage scandal

An EU inspection of French animal feed practices, following the recent scandal surrounding untreated sewage being fed to pigs, has led to a decision to create an animal feed action plan.

Initial proposals from the European Commission are expected in September.

The EU has stated that any action will involve not only legislation, but improved enforcement as well. Regarding the issue of sewage in particular, the Director General of Agriculture has requested details concerning the practice from Dutch and German authorities. Inspection visits to the two countries by the EU’s Veterinary Office are expected.
