Europe should make better use of its rivers and canals as a free but under-exploited transport network, the EU transport committee has said.

It called on the Commission to encourage shipping to diversify from road transport – the principal source of the EU’s air pollution – and to implement a development plan for European waterways, ports and other infrastructure.

They also asked the EC and member states to provide incentives for environmentally friendly engines that produce low level of particulate matter, nitrous and sulphur oxides, and carbon dioxide.
