European car free day planned for September

European towns are being asked to commit themselves to En ville sans my voiture, a car free day throughout Europe planned for 22nd September 2000.

At local level, each town or urban area that takes part will organise the “In town, without my car” day, involving residents, shops, companies, clubs, associations and schools. The aim is to encourage debate on changes needed to improve the quality of life within built up areas.

By the end of June, 423 towns had signed up including 127 in Italy, 93 in Spain, 73 in France and 44 in Germany. In the UK, local authorities in Bath, Deal, Kingsbridge, London Boroughs of Camden, Lambeth, Southwark and Sittingbourne have committed themselves to the event.

Last year the event was taken up by 66 towns in France and 94 in Italy (see related story).
