EXCLUSIVE: Digital technology will lead us to a green economy

Digital technology and effective engagement in sustainability will lead the way to 'greening' the economy, says Whitbread's head of energy and environment Chris George.

Whitbread, the operator of hotel chain Premier Inn and Costa Coffee shops, has this year been driving employee engagement with the use of digital tools.

“I think the biggest ‘green innovation’ isn’t green at all – its digital technology. As digital technology gets ever more engaging, interactive and accessible the possibilities for changing how people think about the environment are endless and that’s exciting,” says George.

Whitbread developed an on-line interactive training tool and quiz game for its team members on the importance of saving waste and energy, which is projected to have a significant effect on the company’s environmental impact.

“It’s part of the basic training package for staff and will enable us to train 40,000 colleagues on why it is important to conserve valuable natural resources and cut waste very quickly and cost effectively,” he says.
