The Repak awards, which took place earlier this month, saw the council awarded the Local Authority of the Year 2008 award.

Councillor Michael O’Donovan, mayor of Fingal, collected the award, made of recovered and recycled glass, wood and plastic at National Recycling Week, according to the Herald.

He said: “This prestigious award reflects our unwavering commitment as a service provider to offer our customers the widest, most convenient, fairest household waste management service while ensuring that we are recycling.”

At the awards ceremony, Dr Andrew Hetherington, Repak chief executive, said: “We are delighted to see the range and quality of initiatives undertaken by Irish business and schools increase this year.”

Repak is funded by the industry through packaging levies to help companies improve packaging recycling.

It is based on the principle of producer responsibility and assists companies with legal compliance.
