First pre-pack food waste study launched

The first study into the rubbish generated by the pre-packed food industry is being launched by the Government's waste watchdog.

New research led by Waste and Resources Action Programme (WRAP) is set examine the amount of waste in the UK’s retail supply chain.

According to WRAP this will be the first time a study like this has been carried out.

And, it will identify how waste can be reduced, so businesses can make cost and environmental savings.

The study will look at four main pre-packed items sandwiches, pizza, quiche and ready meals.

It will also calculate the carbon emissions and economic impact, as well as detailing the amount of water used and disposed of during the manufacture of these products.

Retail supply chain programme manager for WRAP, Charlotte Henderson, said: “Identifying where waste is generated and the reasons why, will help the development of effective solutions which are tailored to these products.

“By sharing these with the sector, we aim to help companies at all stages of the supply chain access these commercial and environmental benefits.”
