The facility needed to process an estimated 32m3/d of sewage in an area next to an airport which had considerable space constraints.

The site was also hindered by being in an area of low alkalinity, which needed to be addressed for the Environment Agency discharge consents to be met.

Enso’s solution was to provide a submerged aerated filter sewage treatment plant to treat the wastewater.

Their Ocean Professional SAF system is installed completely below ground, which minimises the visual impact on the environment.

The system’s biological treatment filters have a number of stages to increase the efficiency of biological oxidation and nitrification.

A balance tank was installed to overcome the deep invert and the biological treatment tanks were
located side by side to minimise the footprint.

All the tanks were installed in pea gravel, after being strapped down to a reinforced base to prevent any flotation.

To address the low alkalinity, a kiosk was fitted with sound absorbing foam to reduce noise and provide a housing for the dosing system.
