WRAP’s Federation House Commitment (FHC) has also delivered savings of 1.5 million cu m of water in the past year, and achieved an overall 16.1% reduction in water use.

Activities such as water reuse, improved efficiency in cleaning operations and product innovation have contributed to these savings as the food and drink sector works towards its industry target of reducing water consumption by 20% by 2020.

According to WRAP, there are now 71 active signatories across 294 sites signed up to the agreement, including members of Dairy UK, who became an official partner in 2012.

Commenting on the results, Dairy UK Director Jim Begg said that water use was now at the top of the agenda for the dairy sector.

“This partnership demonstrates our industry’s commitment to reducing its water consumption and will build upon and complement the water reduction targets already set by the industry’s own Dairy Roadmap,” he said.

Meanwhile Andrew Kuyk, director of sustainability at the Food & Drink Federation, said the agreement was “an excellent example of voluntary collaboration under WRAP’s independent leadership”.
