Food stores cut emissions and costs
Energy savings which will lead to a 2,100 tonne cut in carbon dioxide emissions will be implemented by a major food distributor.
Musgrove Group, which operates SuperValu and Centra franchises, is to work with electricity firm Energia and energy cost management firm ResourceKraft to reduce its CO2 output.
Using a computerised energy efficiency system from ResourceKraft in 20 SuperValu shops in Ireland, the trio of companies predict that they will cut the electricity consumption at participating stores by 44 megawatts.
In the first year, they estimate electricity use will drop by 10% at outlets which use the new initiative.
The companies claim that Twohigs SuperValu in Kanturk, Co Cork, one of the stores to trial the technology is saving over Euro 14,000 off an original annual electricity bill of Euro 140,000.
ResourceKraft claims its approach involves three simple steps: measure, monitor, manage.
It uses a web-based system that provides information on energy and resource usage, which can be displayed in terms of euros per hour, units of electricity or CO2 emissions.
