Galway joins European Mobility Week

Galway is set to consider a variety of environmentally friendly ways of travelling when it takes part in European Mobility Week this month.

It is the first time Galway will be taking part in the initiative, which aims to encourage the public to find more sustainable ways of travelling.

The event runs Europe-wide from September 16 to 22, though Galway is starting early by launching the scheme on September 1.

European Mobility Week grew out of successful In Town Without My Car days.

The car free day is still the centre of the event, with the aim of “mobilising as many citizens as possible”, according to the website.

Practically, this means closing off streets in town and allowing people to walk or cycle around towns more freely.

The day of no cars also gives researchers the opportunity to study the impact on air quality and noise pollution.

According to organisers, over 2,000 cities and towns across Europe take part in the initiative.
