Ikleston Hospital invests in solar to cut costs

An NHS community hospital in Derbyshire is taking action to reduce its carbon footprint and cut costs by installing more than 200 solar panels.

As part of the £166,500 investment by Ikleston Hospital, 212 50kWh Sanyo panels have been installed on two of the buildings at the site by solar firm Eco Environments.

It is anticipated the work will help the hospital reduce its carbon emissions by more than 24 tonnes a year, as well as help the hospital save approximately £5,500 a year on electricity bills.

It is anticipated this figure will increase year-on-year and could help the hospital achieve an average annual return on investment of 16.5%.

Derby Community Health Services facilities co-ordinator John Parrott, said: “The panels will be a major asset in reducing our electricity costs and reducing our carbon emissions.

“A large proportion of the hospital’s power usage is for lighting with the remainder being used for computers, plant rooms and other appliances. In simple terms, the solar panels are allowing us to use much of the hospital lighting for free.”
