EirGrid has been approached by the Government to develop the interconnector, which will run from Deeside in Wales to Woodland in County Meath.

It is believed that the connector is a crucial next step for Ireland as demand for electricity continues to rise, with the estimation being that over the next 20 years demand could rise by as much as 85 per cent.

According to the Fingal Independent, project director John Fitzgerald said: “It is part of an overall plan set out by EirGrid to upgrade Ireland’s energy infrastructure to meet our future needs in a way that enhances security of supply, environmental sustainability and our economic capacity.”

He added that the connector should be in place by 2012, with it being essential to the economic, environmental and energy infrastructure of Ireland.

EirGrid is the independent electricity transmission system operator in Ireland, with the aim of delivering services to both customers and suppliers.
