Ireland to hold biodiversity week

The week is being organised to celebrate the United Nations International Day for Biodiversity, which is due to be held on the May 22nd.

John Gormley, Minister for the Environment, Heritage and Local Government welcomed the announcement of the biodiversity week, which is being organised in partnership between the National Parks and Wildlife Service, local authorities and environmental organisations.

“Biodiversity Week is Ireland’s contribution to a global celebration of biodiversity which aims to increase awareness of the importance of biodiversity and promote action to tackle the loss of many of our species,” said Mr Gormley.

Over 200 events will be taking place throughout Ireland.

The celebration aims to provide an opportunity for people to learn about plants and species and ensure the survival of wildlife for future generations.

A recent report said that biodiversity in Ireland has a value of Euro 2.6bn per year but now faces increased threats from climate change and the introduction of non-native invasive species.
