Irish politicians back call for action on climate change
The majority of Teachta Dalas (TDs) now support a call for a law to make sure Ireland does what it can to tackle climate change, campaigners have announced.
Friends of the Earth revealed that 84 TDs have now signed up to its Stop Climate Chaos campaign.
The Stop Climate Chaos Call to Action commits the signatories to press for an international deal to prevent global warming and to introduce comprehensive carbon pricing in Ireland.
Oisin Coghlan, director of Friends of the Earth, said: “The Government is committed to an all-party approach to climate change.
“There could be no better expression of that than an agreed Act of the Oireachtas.
“The Climate Protection Bill is a good starting point.
“The 26 organisations in Stop Climate Chaos urge the Government to move the Bill to committee where all sides can get on with the business of agreeing the way forward.
“We need to give our climate commitments the force of law.”
Last week, Minister for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government John Gormley said that countries which did not act to tackle climate change were “guilty of a gross dereliction of duty”.
