Biodegradable

DEFINITION: A material which breaks down organically over a period of time, as microorganisms such as bacteria or fungi break it down into naturally-occuring gases and biomass.

The term does not mean the material should be freely released into the environment in an uncontrolled manner, as the speed, method and nature of biodegradation differs between materials.
