Judges anger at India landfill sites
Judges in India's capital Delhi have attacked the poor standards of the city's landfill sites which are over-flowing with rubbish.
The Delhi High Court has threatened to haul city officials before it unless something is done to improve the situation.
The court is particularly concerned as the city is due to host the Commonwealth Games next summer.
And, worried about one landfill site near an airport that is attracting large numbers of birds which it felt could pose a threat to aircraft.
A division bench of justices Sanjay Kishan Kaul and Ajit Bharihoke have ordered city officials of the Municipal Corporation of Delhi and New Delhi Municipal Council to explain to them about the overflowing dumps.
The judges made the decision after reviewing a report from the Central Pollution Control Board, India environmental watchdog, which claimed more than 50% of landfill sites maintained by MCD need urgent attention.
