Erratic water supply in Zimbabwe
Economic downturn has eroded the capacity of communities in Zimbabwe to run and maintain their water supply systems, says UNICEF spokeswoman Shantha Bloeman. Millennium Development Goal (MDG) assessments, estimate that 50% of systems are non-functional.In areas where over 300,000 families have been resettled as part of the land reform programme, access to safe water is estimated to be as low as 11% but at just 1% coverage, sanitation is also a rehabilitation priority.
Failure by Harare City Council to address the continuing water crisis is impacting negatively on the day-to-day running of public institutions in the city, according to a report in the Zimbabwean Standard. Hospitals, clinics, schools and companies in areas of high-density population go without water for days. Officials have warned of an impending public health crisis.
