Mixed fortunes for Scottish Water chiefs

It has been a year of mixed fortunes for those at the top of Scottish Water. While its chairman Alan Alexander departed after disagreements with ministers over its plans for delivering future investment, the publicly owned water company's chief executive, Dr Jon Hargreaves, was proclaimed Scotland's Public Sector Leader of the Year for 2005.

Dr Hargreaves received the prestigious award from the Institute of Directors at a

gala dinner at the SAS Radisson in Glasgow. He was also recognised in the Scottish Director of the Year category, taking the runner-up accolade.

Scottish Water was created in 2002 from the merger of three former regional authorities and is now running the water industry for nearly £3M a week less than the former authorities.

Earlier, Scottish Water was runner up in the UK Utility Award of the Year. Dr Hargreaves said: “I’m pleased to accept these awards on behalf of the three-and-a-half-thousand employees of Scottish Water who have worked magnificently over the past four years to transform the industry in Scotland.

“It’s because of their efforts that customers in Scotland are now getting better value for money and better service. We’ve got much more to do to improve the industry but this is tremendous recognition of what has been achieved so far.”
