Petroleum remediation gel

In a recent in situ bioremediation project undertaken by Response Environmental Services, one company saved around 56% of its costs through opting for bioremediation as opposed to landfill.

In March 1998, Geotechnical Consultants Ground Risk Management, following its phase II site investigation, requested Response to provide a site-specific remediation plan, quotation and method statement for the bioremediation of soil contaminated with petroleum hydrocarbons (TPH).

The proposed application method involved strategically injecting Response Bio-Gel(TM) into areas of both shallow and deep contamination with a high-pressure lance/injection unit in a grid pattern at 1m intervals ensuring even distribution.

The gel counters the common belief that bioremediation is a lengthy process and only effective in warmer months. Providing the microbes with a protective “overcoat”, it maintains warmth and thus allows microbial activity during the winter months, in turn reducing the amount of time required before building can commence.

The regulatory authorities examined the remediation plan to their satisfaction, and it took just two days for the on-site application of the Bio-Gel treatment.

Sampling and chemical analysis has been carried out throughout the project period with treatment success being validated by an independent UKAS-accredited laboratory.
