Cattle raising in Guadarrama calls for “some form of integrated protection that recognise the existence of this agri-forest area and its environmental value”. The Madrid branch of Ecologists in Action, a national network of environmental groups, has published the report.

The authors emphasise that the Guadarrama eco-system has not yet been carefully studied and they warn that continued, unregulated cattle raising of an increasingly intensive nature will add to the environmental damage already incurred from the depopulation of the region. Increasing urbanisation in Spain has led to depopulation of Guadarrama and expansion of large-scale cattle raising.
