Since 1998, Proepa’s inspections of businesses have extended beyond the traditional search for illegal activity as inspectors have sought to measure how much pollution is coming from each site.

Proepa inspectors have given sites a rating from 0 to 100 (100 being the highest environmental performance and 0 the worst) for:

  • atmospheric emissions
  • hazardous waste
  • biological and/or infectious residues

On the release of the survey results, Proepa has drawn attention the wide range of environmental performance within the country. Instead of finding that most companies are polluting at an ‘average’ level, there were many companies with low levels of pollution and another large group of companies creating very high levels of pollution.

The survey is part of Mexico’s National Environmental Programme for 1995-2000. The data excludes information relating to the 1,300 firms that have signed up voluntarily to the Mexican National Programme of Environmental Auditing – Proepa believes that these companies’ pollution levels are lower, overall.
