PENNY SWINGS INTO ACTION

PENNY HYDRAULICS' Swing Lift Kerb Grab is designed for the safe, efficient and cost-effective handling of access covers, kerb stones and other loads so that maintenance and construction engineers can eliminate the need for manual handling and comply with current and impending safety regulations to reduce the risk of injury.

The Kerb Grab has a lifting capacity of 250kg making it ideal for all sorts of loads that need to be handled during maintenance and construction tasks. It can be fitted quickly and easily to virtually any vehicle including vans, flatbeds, dropsides and tippers.

The need for safe and efficient handling has never been more prominent. Manual handling of kerb stones for new build projects has been outlawed since June 2004 and has been illegal for single stones, short runs and maintenance tasks from January 2005. According to the Health & Safety Executive (HSE), around 90,000 construction industry workers suffer musculoskeletal injuries each year, double the all-industry average. A typical kerbstone weighs around 67kg and studies suggest that each one is manually handled at least three times from arrival on site to its final position.

The Kerb Grab incorporates a 2m boom with dual pivot points so that the operator can undertake lifts within a 2m radius, allowing the laying of up to 4m of kerbing without moving the vehicle. The versatility of the unit means it can also be used to lift a wide range of equipment such as compactors, compressors and tools. Safe operation by one person was a key consideration when designing the unit. An overload protection device ensures that operators cannot lift more than the maximum laden weight of 250kg. Push-buttons on the control box ensure simple and precise operations. Separate controls for crane and vacuum lift help ensure operators do press the wrong button and release the vacuum and risk dropping the load.

It can be fitted quickly with no need for welding or modifications to the chassis or bodywork, and can be removed easily when required – for example for use on another vehicle or to create temporary space for other equipment or loads.

The unit’s gate hinge mount with socket-mounted pillar means it can be deployed on other vehicles with similar fittings to provide operators with the flexibility to use

their investment across the fleet. This flexibility is enhanced by the unit’s eight- to ten-year operating life which means it can be redeployed on replacement vehicles.

All Penny Hydraulics cranes are CE-marked to comply with current legislation and designed and manufactured to meet its exacting quality assurance standards for safe, economical and reliable performance with long maintenance-free service intervals.

Solid construction with steel components promotes durability and provides excellent protection against corrosion and wear.
