Two-for-one with Terberg

When is a skip-loader not a skip-loader? When it's a dual purpose non-compacting recycling collection vehicle as well

Huntingdonshire District Council has a particular problem with the collection of recyclable materials. There are 110 amenity sites in the district utilising 1,100-litre and 1,280-litre wheeled bin containers to collect glass, cans, and paper.

However, schools throughout the area collect recyclables in 8.5m3 skips. In addition, the area is prone to flooding and sandbags are made available to the public via skips deposited at critical locations in emergency situations.

Until now, both systems have been serviced either by three-compartment non-compacting collection vehicles for the local amenity sites, or skip-loaders for the schools. But there was a growing need to provide additional vehicle support to cope with growing demand at certain times.

A cost-effective solution was found in a TL Skiploader from Terberg Matec in conjunction with a DAF FA L55 4×2 chassis with skip loading equipment all plated at 18 tonnes GVW. The TL Skiploader is a demountable non-compacting dry recyclable material collection system designed for use with conventional skip-loading vehicles.

It is wedge-shaped at the front to optimise the load carrying capacity within the 12m3 capacity single internal compartment, and has a hefty powered bin-lifter mounted on the opening door at the rear capable of handling 1,280-litre containers with a maximum weight of 500kg. Quick-release hydraulic and electrical connections enable rapid offloading of the body to return the vehicle to regular skip operations.

Huntingdonshire District Council has been a Terberg customer for some time, having previously purchased several TCA-DEL automatic low-level bin-lifters for refuse collection purposes and the TL Skiploader is proving to be a great success with operations manager Nick Martlew.

“We have been pleased to work closely with Terberg in developing this new vehicle and are delighted with the flexibility that the final product brings to our operations,” he says.

“This latest vehicle continues our long association with Terberg, who have supplied us with bin lifting equipment over many years now with high standards of reliability and service.”
