Shredtec invests £1M in PVC plant capacity

One of the UK's largest volume post-consumer PVC recyclers, Shredtec Recyclers is to invest up to £1M to expand its Oldham site's PVC processing capacity.

The proposed purpose-built plant on a three-acre site adjoining Shredtec’s existing operation in Mossdown Road would be capable of processing up to six tonnes of waste PVC per hour – 50% more than current throughput. Investment in new buildings and plant includes two mobile shredders, a conveyor system and metal detecting/sorting equipment.

Shredtec managing director, Ian Murray, says the investment will create a highly efficient operation as the plant would be able to process complete de-glazed frames (pictured), removing the need for manual dismantling.

He says: “We are shaping the new plant around what comes in – 80% of our material comes from waste transfer stations, which act as collection hubs and with the best will in the world, comes contaminated with mud and other debris. Frames go in one end and the new plant would do the rest, producing chipped clean plastic, ferrous and non-ferrous materials. These would be sorted automatically and separately collected for further re-processing.

“For every tonne of PVC we get on our weighbridge, we make an immediate payment of £70 minimum and only stipulate that the glass is removed. However, we will also accept glazed frames on a ‘free tip’ basis.”
