Brownfield Expo launches

Brownfield Expo is the newly named contaminated land exhibition at this year's Sustainabilitylive! event. LAWR offers a taster of what visitors can expect in this special preview

Brownfield regeneration is a key element of the Government’s plans for creating sustainable communities. Brownfield sites are the nations’ land bank. And, with the continual rise in landfill tax and the need to pre-treat soils prior to removal off-site, there are many issues to be discussed and opportunities to be seized at Brownfield Expo (BEX) 2008.

Taking place at the NEC in Birmingham from 20-22 May, BEX is the UK’s national event for discussion and debate for local authorities, property developers, consultants and suppliers of remediation and technology services. It forms part of Sustainabilitylive!, the UK’s umbrella event for excellence and innovation in the water, environment, energy and land sectors.

This year’s BEX has the support of principal industry bodies. These include the British Urban Regeneration Association, the Environmental Industries Commission, and the Environment Agency.

Technical seminars

The event encompasses a high-level technical seminar programme running across the three-day show. The themes for the programme presented included legislative and legal issues, technologies for contaminated land, and risk assessment and insurance.

Speakers include Sam Deacon, senior ecological risk assessment consultant at ENVIRON. With the imminent launch of the ecological risk assessment framework, he will describe what this means for contaminated land practitioners in the UK.

The current status of the generic quantitative risk assessments (GQRA) will also be discussed. Paul Nathanail, professor in engineering geology at the University of Nottingham, will present recent guidance in the human health exposure assessment and what these mean for GQRA. Other speakers include representatives from Atkins, CL:AIRE, and Environmental Resources Management.

More than 450 organisations will be exhibiting at Sustainabilitylive!. Within BEX, exhibitors include: Atkins Water and Environmental; McArdle Group; Bluesky; Carus Europe; Cleansing Services Group; Land Science Technologies; Regenesis; University of Nottingham; and LCM Environmental.
