Stirling opts for rigid kerbside collection vehicle

Stirling Council, impressed with the performance of the 12 bespoke mini-articulated recycling trucks recently supplied by Corby-based Traiload, part of King Highway Products Ltd, has now taken delivery of three, 7.5 tonne rigid recycling trucks to enhance its successful kerbside collection scheme.

Fitted to tilting ISUZU NQR 70 chassis cabs, the new vehicle has a low height body, which like the mini-artics, incorporates seven separate waste collection stillages. Each of the stillages, which are manufactured from a light-weight, impact resistant combination of plastic and steel, can carry 500kg of household waste such as glass bottles and containers, paper, textiles and plastic bottles.

Mark Nicol, Area Co-ordinator for Stirling Council’s recycling scheme, commented: “We decided to specify the rigid vehicles in addition to the mini-artics as they provide easier accessibility when undertaking rural collections such as remote farms and where access can be very restricted, such as minor cul-de-sacs. Like the mini-articulated vehicles the stillages are removed and replaced by forklifts to facilitate fast easy turn-round making them extremely time efficient and cost effective to operate.”

Since acquiring the mini-articulated trucks the council has been collecting around 1,200 tonnes of waste each month which means it is well on the way to exceeding the Government’s biodegradable diversion target of 25% by 2006.

Close liaison

“We have been delighted with the performance of the mini-artics” says Mark Nicol. “Traiload used their extensive technical expertise and worked closely with us to provide a bespoke vehicle which is more than exceeding our requirements, and we are confident the rigid trucks will prove to be just as successful in helping us to increase our recycling collections even further.”
