Battery power serves recycling and street cleansing

On show at last month's CIWM Torbay 2004 event, Bradshaw Electric Vehicles displayed a range of battery powered vehicles for recycling/waste collection and street cleansing.


Leading the line up of vehicles dedicated to waste management is the road performance “Trucktravel” street cleansing vehicle, with a maximum speed of 40 mph and an operating range, on a single battery charge, of 40 miles.
Available with numerous body options, this vehicle has been ordered by several UK local authorities since its debut last year, for inner-city street cleansing operations.

For kerbside street cleansing and recycling schemes, Bradshaw exhibited two further vehicle types. The PC40 is a 1,500kg capacity pedestrian controlled waste and litter collection, four wheeled, tiller steering vehicle. The PC40 chassis is adaptable to a wide range of applications using purpose-built bodies, including cageback and full-tipping refuse collection body, complete with sliding panels.

The PC30 is a compact, 1,000kg capacity pedestrian controlled vehicle, which can be used safely on pavements and within confined areas on housing estates, states Bradshaw.

For wheeled bin collection in retail centres, a new Bradshaw seven-tonne capacity, battery-powered tow tractor, the T6 was on show for the first time. The four-wheeled tow tractor has the performance to tow wheeled-bin trains with power in reserve for ramps and inclines.

Base model addition

Bradshaw also recently announced that a new seven-tonne capacity base model in its T5 battery-powered tow tractor range has been introduced as an option for industrial buyers looking at three-wheeled, “no frills” tractors for general towing work in production areas and warehousing.

The all-new Bradshaw Electric T5 is stated to retain the rugged, all-steel compact body of the company’s T5 tow tractor concept, together with all essential performance vehicle characteristics.

Power is provided to the rear wheels to ensure maximum traction, 600 kg on the hook, and weight distribution has been arranged to provide steering which is light but with adequate feedback to the driver.

Safety is ensured by a low centre of gravity, some 130mm, and by three braking systems which include hydraulic braking to all the wheels and an electro-magnetic brake linked to the seat pad which stops the vehicle as soon as the driver leaves the seat. The same device also works as a parking brake until the driver is seated safely.

Other features include a comfort seat for the driver, a standard load area behind the driver and familiar, car-style controls.
