As part of the £700m AquaFund initiative, which provides grants to public sector organisations to fund work to lower water consumption, WSCC has contracted engineers ADSM to survey all of its sites to check the location and condition of water meters in a bid to assess where savings can be made.
Water efficiency technologies such as rain water harvesting and automatic meter readers will then be considered to see which offer the largest savings.
Cabinet Member for finance and resources Michael Brown, said: “We estimate that the County Council can save 20% of its current water consumption by signing up to the scheme.”
He added that the council was also attracted to the scheme because of its close links to charity group WaterAid.
ADSM director Patrick McCart, said: “This scheme will generate real savings as well as help the environment. It’s essential that large organisations like councils take the lead on water efficiency, particularly in the south east where a drought has been declared.”
