Making a commitment to energy

A survey conducted in February on behalf of energy specialist AEC, found that in order to implement their energy policies many companies are employing 'green wardens'. These energy specialists are tasked with putting in place energy conservation measures to save money and reduce CO2 emissions.

To aid the activities of the green wardens, AEC is offering free energy efficiency training seminars, which consist of a review of HVAC plant in conjunction with a presentation on maximising energy efficiency from core plant. These seminars will help green wardens better advise employees and employers on the best energy practices. They will focus on core heating plant, an area not given sufficient attention according to the survey. AEC claims that many of the measures it offers can result in reductions in energy bills of between 20 and 40 per cent.

The survey, conducted by an independent research company, questioned 50 facilities managers from the 1,000 largest UK companies with such staff. When asked “Do you have an energy policy?” 90 per cent of the facilities managers questioned responded positively.

Measures currently employed by green wardens include recommending employees to switch off lights and other equipment when they are not using them and closing doors to keep heat in. However, AEC argues that, while these measures are to be applauded, they tackle the subject in the wrong way by only addressing the soft issues. “Only by concentrating on an energy policy that considers the potential savings of an efficiently run heating plant, can companies hope to achieve significant reductions in costs and CO2 emissions,” said Julian Miller, director of AEC. “We hope green wardens will be able to pass on the energy saving tips learnt at the seminars to their employers, helping them make work environments more eco-friendly as well as cutting their energy bills,” he continued.
