Minister concerned over Sellafield safety

Ireland's Environment Minister wants the Gardia and the Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland (RPII) to be involved in assessing the safety of Sellafield.

John Gormley was commenting after the publication of a Friends of the Earth (FoE) report assessing the nuclear site.

He said his department will study the content of the report and make recommendations on the findings.

Mr Gormley said that Ireland could be adversely affected by the site in the future.

He spoke of his awareness of “accidents and incidents” that had been reported over the years.

“The current programme for Government continues the commitment to pursuing our political, diplomatic and legal efforts with a view to securing the safe decommissioning of all nuclear reprocessing facilities at Sellafield,” he added.

Increased cooperation with the UK on the issue has led to the Gardia and the RPII being allowed access to the site, together with an exchange of information about the safety of Sellafield.

The Voodoo Economics and the Doomed Nuclear Renaissance report published by Friends of the Earth says that the Sellafield complex is “more dangerous” than Chernobyl.
