Mozambique: pesticide destruction proves problematic

The authorities in Mozambique are looking for a solution for the disposal of hundreds of tonnes of obsolete pesticides, collected with $6 million support from Denmark.

The initial plan to collect the pesticides in the city of Matola for incineration in a cement kiln has had to be reassessed as it was realised that they could not be safely transported, according to the Panafrican News Agency.

The Mozambique Information Agency reports that the EIA for the original plan is being reassessed in any case, due to local opposition in Matola, and fears that the original EIA was not independent, as it was carried out by the Danes, with little local input.
