Plan A, which won an edie Award for Environmental Excellence earlier this month, is the business’s green drive and has a set a target of zero waste to landfill by 2012.

M&S chief executive, Marc Bolland, explained the business was trialling new methods of recycling the remaining 8%.

Mr Bolland, the former head of supermarket chain Morrisions, said: “We’ve achieved a great deal and we now want to make sure that more of our 21 million customers get involved in Plan A, making it easier for them to live more sustainable lifestyles.”
