Nationwide services tackle pest control

A network of national and local specialists provides a wide range of pest control services across the country. One of the major operators, both internationally and within the UK, is Rentokil Initial, whose Pest Control division lays claim to be the world's largest commercial pest control service.

The company states that it places special emphasis on health and safety and the environment in all its activities. Research is targeted to understanding the characteristics and behavioural patterns of pests. As a result, the company adds, control systems have been developed which reduce or remove the need for toxic materials whilst producing and effective, and often long-term, solutions.

Environmentally aware treatments include non-harmful bird deterrents, zero-residue bating and innovative detection techniques incorporating advanced electronics.

The standard pest control service normally involves eight visits being carried out each year for specified pests. A Pest Control technician calls to carry out an inspection and treatment at a client’s site and apply pesticides as and when necessary.

Rentokil Initial provides a range of pest control, prevention and proofing services, plus electronic fly killers, fumigation, and vertebrate pest management.

Fumigation can use methyl bromide, phosphine, carbon dioxide and nitrogen, employing specially constructed, airtight “bubbles”, stated to kill 99.9% of all pests present.

Within these bubbles virtually anything can be fumigated, such as rare paintings, furniture and books. Where necessary, stacked commodities, rooms and even buildings may also be treated.
