New National Measurement Partnership set to improve UK competitiveness

The UK Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) has launched a programme to create a National Measurement Partnership (NMP), a network that will promote better measurement practice in the UK.

The programme will bring together all measurement specialists in the UK and give British companies access to 100 laboratories that make up the National Measurement System thus adopting good measurement practice and improving competitiveness.

The objectives of the three-year programme are to increase the uptake of traceable measurement in the UK, to increase the UK skill base in measurement through formal training and to increase industrial access to measurement expertise.

At the heart of the NMP is the creation of a forum bringing together industry representatives, the DTI and the UK’s national and local accredited laboratories.

The principal task for the forum will be to ensure that the UK’s measurement needs are being addressed through the identification and promotion of good practice. A key element in this programme will be knowledge transfer from UK measurement experts through existing industrial networks.
