New open channel flow logger helps water companies meet EA regulations cost-effectively

NEWS RELEASE: A new flow logger unit - the latest addition to the new MCU range from Solartron Mobrey - measures instantaneous flow and records daily totals of open channel flows for up to 60 days, in accordance with Environmental Agency (EA) regulations. MCULOG comes complete with PC software LOGView, to provide an ideal solution for flow discharge or intake monitoring, costing about 30% less than equivalent competitive products.

Following an extensive competitive evaluation, Thames Water has selected MCULOG for inclusion in its framework agreement, as the replacement logging unit for open chanel flow on its sewage treatment sites. Rob Nockolds, area ICA Engineer for Thames Water explains: 3MCULOG has a clear, easy to use menu-driven interface which simplifies set up. The download software is easy for operations people to use, and is backwards compatible with previous generation Solartron Mobrey loggers. The unit has shown itself to be highly reliable in the gathering and transfer of data. our trials show it to be ideal for our purpose, that is measuring open channel influent and effluent volumes in a manner which will also meets the need of the EA.

Forming part of the modular system of compatible level measurement and control instrumentation, the MCU range offers feature-rich functionality with 4-20mA output and HART compatibility. The new logger unit has built-in equations for many common open channel flow structures including flumes and weirs to ISO1438/1, ISO4359 and BS3680, with compensation for boundary layer, liquid viscosity and discharge coefficients. Configured with a suitable ultrasonic level transmitter, the unit provides reliable, continuous, real-time flow data automatically, and is fully ATEX certified Intrinsically Safe for use in hazardous areas.

MCULOG can record and store up to 4,800 flow events, as well as accumulated data for up to 60 days. Flow samples can be recorded at user-set time periods from one to 99 minutes, and the display shows both instantaneous and totalised flow along with flow units and alarm limits. Flow sampling automatically changes to a fast logging rate when flow increases, to provide mor detailed data under these conditions.

An RS232 interface allows the download of data to a portable data collection unit or a PC, for further analysis and professional presentation using LOGView. The easy-to-use software receives data intelligently, adding only new measurements to the stored set, and sequencing them automatically. Flow data can be displayed, stored or rpinted in tabular or graphical format, by the day, week, month or year, against user-set limits, and easily incorporated into flow audit reports for internal and EA purposes.

Other features of the MCULOG include five programmable relays for alarm duties and/or gate control and an integral Keypad which gives access to all functions. The intuitive menu-driven system is easy to navigate, and a password security system prevents access by unauthorised users.

The logger is primarily designed for use with solartron Mobrey’s MSP900 11m ultrasonic level transmitter or 9700 hydrostatic level transmitter, but is also compatible with third party instrumentation which ahs a HART or 4-20mA output proportional to level.
