New technology on show at em-CERTS 2004

LAWE reports on the latest development in monitoring equipment and technology for stack emissions and ambient pollution which are on show at this year's em-CERTS event.

Air Monitors Ltd is showing a wide range of particulate monitoring technology for use in both ambient and emissions applications, including the well-established TEOM, which, with the addition of the new FDMS unit is able to more accurately measure true airborne PM concentrations without the need for calibration factors.

The TEOM/FDMS PM monitor gives information in near real time on the volatile and non-volatile fractions of airborne PM. As well as ambient applications the TEOM principle can be applied to measurement of mass concentration of stack particulate and the new TEOM 7000 is stated to be the only instrument able to give real time stack PM data. The system can monitor total, PM10 or PM2.5 fractions and automatically maintains isokinetic sampling conditions throughout the test period.

A range of passive samplers for gases and particulate will also be shown for use inside and outdoors and for personal monitoring.

Casella ETi specialises in the supply and service of a wide range of air quality and continuous emissions monitoring systems. At em-CERTS this year, the company is featuring its new comprehensive range of portable and fixed mercury analysers, including applications for research, process control and emissions monitoring. Also being previewed is the innovative Amesa continuous dioxin sampling system and the new range of NEO lasergas 2 instruments.

CODEL International Ltd, which specialises in the design and manufacture of high-technology instrumentation for monitoring combustion processes and atmospheric pollutant emissions, is currently in the process of gaining further MCERTS accreditation for the new SmartCem series product group. The next generation of instrumentation is evolving and offers low range, application-specific measurements suitable for gas turbine and incineration application in-line with latest EU directives.

Enviro Technology is launching a new, low cost, high reliability Opsis CEM System for Power Plant Operators. Designated CP100, this dilution extraction system combines proven chemiluminescence and UV fluorescent monitoring techniques with an ultra low-maintenance sampling system to measure SO2 and NOx with further options for NO2, O3, CO and CO2.

Also on show are the Opsis System 400 Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (DOAS) cross-duct system that measures up to six-monitoring paths using non-contact, in-situ technology. Provides MCERTS-approved measurements of CO, NO, NO2, SO2, HCl, H2O, O2 meeting the requirements of the 2000/76/EC Waste Incineration and Large Combustion Plant Directives and the Zambelli Model 6000 ISOPLUS that samples thermodynamic parameters and updates isokinetic flow rate in real-time and which may be configured to automatically monitor stacks/ducts having different sections and sizes.

LAND Instruments International is exhibiting its range of MCerts approved equipment. Land is showing the FGAII continuous emissions monitoring system, 4500 Series dust monitors and the Lancom III portable gas analyser.

The recent MCerts approval for FGAII further demonstrates that Advanced Dual Sensor Technology (ADST) is a high performance measurement technique for continuous emissions monitoring. FGAII can further boast TÜV and ISO approval. FGAII provides full scale measuring ranges for pollutant gases from 10 ppm to 40,000 ppm, with a drift specification of less than 2% per month.

Also 4500 Series dust monitors are currently undergoing final testing for both TÜV and MCerts approvals.
Lancom III is the latest portable gas analyser with full nine gas measurement capability.

P S Analytical provides systems for the ultra-low level determination and speciation of mercury and the hydride forming elements utilising its Millennium and Sir Galahad systems and associated accessories.

The company reports that particular success has been achieved in the petrochemical, chemical and environmental markets.

Recent developments utilising the Sir Galahad (for the determination of mercury in gaseous media) allow the quality and speciation profile of mercury in gas streams, with particular success in the natural gas industry, where several on-line systems have been successfully installed worldwide operating unattended around-the-clock. The Sir Galahad also forms the basis of PSA’s systems for the determination of mercury in stack emissions.

In both applications PSA has been responsible for the complete installation from the sampling through pretreatment and measurement and reporting. The measurement integrity can be checked using PSA’s proprietary calibration source.
