New waste legislation to ‘challenge’ Irish industry

Minister for the Environment, Heritage & Local Government, John Gormely, has reported that challenges ahead for Ireland's businesses with the introduction of the new Biodegradable Waste strategy.

Speaking at a Composting Association of Ireland conference yesterday (January 26th), Mr Gormley explained that the implementation of the new national strategy – published in 2006 – serves as an opportunity for Ireland’s compost industry.

“We have achieved much in recycling in recent years and by continuing to work together I have no doubt that our success in recycling can be replicated across the composting sector,” he said.

“I realise the need to drive material away from landfill and so I will be introducing new legislation to make changes to the landfill levy. Diversion of material from landfill will provide the composting industry with opportunities for expansion.”

The legislation will be in accordance with the EU Directive on the landfill of waste.

Mr Gormley has also vowed to work with industry to encourage the employment of commercial recycling.
