The Port of Newport aims to build on its success in the metal recycling markets by adding a huge Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment (WEEE) recycling plant to its facilities.

The Welsh facility will be built by Associated British Ports and private company Sims Recycling Solutions after the signing of a 15-year deal which will see ABP invest £2.2 million in the plant, which aims to process 100,000 tonnes of WEEE per annum.

Newport is already one of Europe’s leading metal recycling hubs and claims to be home to the world’s largest industrial metal shredder.

The new WEEE facility will cover 12 acres, making for a total of 36 acres given over to recycling in the Welsh port.
