Developed by Belgian chemist Emile Roumieux, Atako’s products – based on a special shrinkage free vinyl ester resin – have been patented in 20 countries and are recognised as amongst the most advanced corrosion protection products in the world.

Atako systems will be manufactured at a purpose built plant in Belgium by Flowcrete Europe and in Malaysia by Flowcrete Asia to service the booming Far East market.

The products will be marketed by Flowcrete’s worldwide network of sales offices with installation by locally trained specialist licensed applicators.

Under the deal, Flowcrete has formed a new Corrosion Protection Division to be headed by Conrad K Roumieux, the son of the inventor Emile, in Brussels, which will focus on selling Atako products into petrochemical processing, waste treatment and pharmaceutical markets, and any industry where chemicals are used.

The division will also provide technical training and support to clients, engineers, applicators and Flowcrete sale offices and production plants worldwide.

Speaking from Brussels, Conrad Roumieux, Managing Director, Flowcrete Corrosion Protection, said: “This will be a fantastic marriage between two of the world’s leading innovators in industry. Flowcrete now has the most advanced range of resin technology in the world to meet clients’ requirements.”

Based in Sandbach, Cheshire, Flowcrete already has 15 offices around the world, including manufacturing plants in the UK, Asia, Brazil, Sweden and the US and employs around 250 people.

Since Flowcrete was launched in 1982 its rise has been spectacular. The company has undertaken some of the world’s largest and most prestigious flooring projects, including Chek Lap Kok Airport in Hong Kong, the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff and the high-profile Sharjah Mega Mall in the United Arab Emirates.

Flowcrete’s strong focus on research and development has led to a number of accolades, including a series of DTi SMART awards and, most recently, the Duke of Westminster Award for Business Excellence, presented earlier this year.

Flowcrete’s chairman and founder, Dawn Gibbins MBE, said: “This is a fantastic opportunity for the Group to develop new niche markets worldwide.”
