The Spanish Government has announced that it will fund an investigation of the oil tanker the Prestige which sank off the Galician coast in 2002.

The wreck is in deep water some 140 miles northwest of Spain.

Specialists will be sent to visually examine the ship between June and September, when weather conditions are likely to be most favourable, to see how much oil remains in the hull and what might be done to prevent further leaking.
