MALI-MAURITANIA: Thirteen die in water dispute

Thirteen people died in communal clashes in June 1999 along the border between Mauritania and Mali. The conflict started when herdsmen in Missira-Samoura village in western Mali, refused to allow a Mauritanian horseman to use a watering hole.

The horseman returned with some of his clansmen, attacking the village on 20 June, causing two deaths. In the retaliation that followed 11 more died. Government officials from both countries are working together to restore peace along their borders.
