Speaking to Stop Climate Chaos protestors who had paraded to the Customs House, Minister Ryan claimed that “too many people are asleep and unaware of the peril we face”, and that they needed to be awakened in order to bring about a “global response”.
He conceded that government has a role to play, but emphasised that “the changes of the scale we need always work best when the political imperative comes from the ground up”.
Businesses in Ireland are being encouraged to help by improving energy efficiency with energy saving light bulbs, car sharing schemes and other measures, and many are making great strides.
However, cynicism still remains and those crying ‘false alarm’ should be shown up, Minister Ryan continued.
“When the cynic cites China as the problem, he cannot see the little label sticking out from his neck showing that the very shirt on his back was made with energy used in China,” he said.
Minister Ryan also called for more green energy and cleaner transport: “We can feel the power of the wind today. Anyone who has grown up surfing on the Atlantic knows the power of a single wave. It is surely not beyond us to organise a clean transport system that really works.”
